Jean-Georges Vongerichten has opened Spice Market restaurant in London

After a nine-year absence, Michelin-starred celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten returned to London to open his highly anticipated restaurant Spice Market in the new W London-Leicester Square hotel.

It’s the long-awaited gastro return Londoners have been waiting for.

After a nine-year absence following the closure of his critically acclaimed restaurant Vong, three Michelin-starred, celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten was given a welcome at the premiere of his new London restaurant, Spice Market, which opened February 14 along with the W London-Leicester Square hotel.

Hailed as one of the most anticipated restaurant openings in London, Vongerichten will be bringing back some of the spices and flavors of his former Thai-French restaurant Vong, at Spice Market, modeled after its sister location in New York of the same name.

Inspired by the “vibrant street life of South East Asia,” the chef’s menu is not for the timid palate: flavors are bold and aromatic with rich, exotic curries. Dishes are created to transport patrons to a Vietnamese street market or Thai food stall. Signature dishes include: Spiced Chicken Samosa with Coriander Yogurt, Cod with Malaysian Chili Sauce and Thai Basil, and Pork Vindaloo.

Prices are unavailable at this time.

“I’m thrilled to be returning to London and opening Spice Market in the heart of London, Leicester Square,” Vongerichten said in a statement. “London is such a diverse and vibrant city that I think it will be the perfect place for the European flagship Spice Market.”

The French chef has been a high profile ambassador for South Asian cuisine after traveling extensively throughout the region. At Spice Market, food is served family-style throughout the meal and is placed at the center of the table for everyone to share.

Signature cocktails also include the Ginger Margarita, Lychee Raspberry Bellini and Pineapple Mojito.

The new year for London’s restaurant and hotel scene has already been an auspicious one, with high-profile openings creating a culinary stir and much media fanfare. In addition to Spice Market, celebrity chef and fellow Michelin-star recipient Heston Blumenthal partnered with the Mandarin Oriental hotel to open his first London restaurant Dinner, which received wide acclaim among critics and the public alike. Dinner opened January 31.
